FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT CHEMICAL PEELS & INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE:

What are chemical / skin peels?
Chemical peels produce controlled injury to the skin, which promote growth of new skin and improved appearance. A variety of chemicals can be used as peeling agents and include glycolic, trichloroacetic (TCA), salicylic and resorcinol. The different chemical solutions produce different degrees of injury to the skin.

What are chemical peels used for?
Chemical peels are used for the treatment of photo-aging (from sun damage), wrinkles, scarring, acne, precancerous lesions, and discoloration (including melasma, freckles, and age spots).

How are chemical peels performed?
There are numerous chemical peels and each one is performed differently. In general, chemical peels usually begin with vigorous cleansing of the skin, followed by application of the appropriate peel.

What is the most popular peel solution?

Glycolic Acid - probably due to the fact that all skin types benefit from Glycolic Acid - is the most commonly recognized chemical peel solution. Salicylic Acid is also very common for use in acne treatments.

How long do chemical peels take?
Most peels can be performed within a few minutes, depending on size of the area being treated.

What will my skin feel like after a chemical peel?
The state of your skin after a peel depends on the type of chemical used and your skin type. Superficial peels have limited effects. Medium peels may cause some redness and the deeper peels may require 10-14 days to recover.

How many peels will I need?
Generally chemical peels are done once every 2-3 weeks, until the desired results are achieved. Maintenance peels can then be performed once a month.

How long do the results last?
With good sun protection, results can last months, even years. This is dependent upon the depth of the peel. The deeper peels generally provide a long-lasting effect.

What are the risks of chemical peels?
Superficial peels are quite safe, although minor irritation of the skin can occur. The risk of deep peels can include infection, scarring, redness, and discoloration. During a very deep peel (administered under the care of a physician only), anesthesia should be used and vital signs monitored.

How long after a chemical peel before I can return to normal activities?
  A. Light Peels- The light peel takes approximately three to five days to complete the shedding process. No downtime required.

  B. Medium Peels- Medium peels usually persist for five to seven days. The skin may or may not flake and fall away. AHAs can produce some redness with little or no flaking, depending on the individual.

  C. Deep Peels- May take several weeks to fully recover. This type of peel is usually effective in treating hyperpigmentation, acne scarring, fine lines and wrinkles.

What should I use at home to maintain the condition of my skin after a chemical peel?
You can use a mild cleanser (Green Tea Cleanser) and always include either Hyaluronic Replenishing Serum / Green Tea Anti-Oxidant Serum as often as needed. You may resume regular skincare 3-5 days after a peel or once redness or peeling is no longer apparent. Sun protection is a must!

It is crucial to use the right peel for your skin type and to follow the proper technique for application (see video).

GETTING STARTED:

For best results, use a light chemical exfoliator every day for 1 week. If your skin is not red, irritated or peeling, you can proceed with the skin peeling treatment.

APPLYING THE DAILY EXFOLIATOR:

For daily use when skin is not red, peeling or irritated.

1. Cleanse skin, rinse and pat dry.

2. Apply a few drops of Daily Exfoliator to gauze pad & buff skin gently in a circular motion.

3. After 1-2 minutes rinse skin with water & pat dry

4. Apply Hyaluronic Moisturizer Serum.

PRE-PEEL INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Prior to your peel: Avoid facials, waxing and electrolysis.

2. If you are pregnant or currently using any prescription skin care products, check with your doctor before performing a peel.

3. 24 hours before and after a peel, cease using any non-Peel RX cleansers, moisturizers, exfoliators, sun protection products or other skin care products.

4. Two days before performing a peel, conduct a patch test:
Apply a small amount of peel solution to a dime-sized area of the face. Wait 30 seconds, then rinse off with cold water. If skin is excessively irritated, use Neutralizing Solution (see below). Observe results for the next 5 days. Mild to moderate redness or stinging is normal. Excessive redness, stinging, burning, blistering or other severe reaction may indicate that a lower peel strength is needed.

APPLYING THE SKIN PEEL SOLUTION:

NOTE: DO NOT APPLY PEEL SOLUTION MORE FREQUENTLY THAN ONCE EVERY 2 WEEKS

CAUTION: During the peel, you may experience mild to moderate burning or stinging. This is normal and means that the peel is working. CAUTION: If at any time you feel uncomfortable or the skin reacts with excessive redness or stinging, the solution should be washed off immediately with repeated splashes of cold water and/or the neutralizing solution (see below).

1. We recommend using our Neutralizer Solution when performing AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) peels. However, a solution of 2 tbsp of household baking soda with 1 cup of tepid water in a small bowl can be substituted.

2. Remove makeup and wash face with a mild cleanser, such as Peel RX Glycolic Cleanser.

3. Peel RX products are designed for those experienced with skin peeling treatments. If you have limited experience with peels or if you are unsure of your tolerance level, we recommend using one of the lower strength peels and initially leaving the peel on for not more than 20-30 seconds.

4. Shake peel bottle well. Apply 1-2 ml of peel solution to a gauze pad and apply to face using a mild buffing action. Avoid eye area, lips, and insides of nostrils. Continue gently buffing for 30- 90 seconds. (During Salicylic Peel or Jessner's application, often a frosting of the skin will occur - this is a good indication that the peel is working and care should be taken to not leave the peel on the skin for too long.) TCA will penetrate deeper with excess application, as it goes looking for protein to neutralize itself. Both the Jessner's Solution and TCA should be used with caution, as they can peel too deep if not used properly, resulting in breaks in skin and excess swelling.

5. After the peel application, rinse face with cool water and use the neutralizing solution, if necessary. As your tolerance level increases, peel may be left on for longer periods of time, up to 2-3 minutes.

6. Gently pat face dry with a clean cotton towel. Do not rub skin.

7. Apply Peel RX Hyaluronic Moisturizer Serum to soothe and nourish your
new skin.
POST-PEEL INSTRUCTIONS:

CAUTION: During this time following a peel, take care not to pick or irritate the skin. Apply cold water and Peel RX Hyaluronic Moisturizer Serum.

Immediately after the peel, the skin may be red and blotchy, slightly raised, tight, shiny, or feel sensitive. Swelling and darkening of the skin is common with TCA and Jessner's Solution. These are all normal reactions to the peel and symptoms should subside within 1-2 days for a light peel and 7-9 days for a deeper peel.

Avoid direct sunlight on your face. Be sure to use SPF 30 or higher.

Approximately 5-7 days following the peel (a few days longer for a deeper peel), you may resume using the Daily Exfoliator, provided that all residual redness and peeling has subsided. Clean the skin with warm water and a mild cleanser (Green Tea Cleanser). Use fingertips (not a wash cloth) as the skin is very sensitive at this time. Avoid the use of abrasive or exfoliating sponges. After cleansing, pat dry with a clean towel.

Apply moisturizer to keep the exfoliating skin soft and the new skin protected.
For a minimum of one month after the peel procedure, client should not have hair removed by any technique.

Makeup application can be resumed 5-7 days after the peel, providing there is no presence of redness, irritation, tenderness, or crusting of the skin.

Avoid sun exposure - this includes tanning beds. Sunlight on the skin after a peel can cause brown discoloration of the new skin. A sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher should be applied every morning before going outdoors.

Sunburn Alert: This product may increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun and the possibility of sunburn. Use a sunscreen, wear protective clothing, and limit sun exposure while using this product.
